Migraines are strong, painful headaches that form on both sides of the head. One or two episodes of Migraines are sufficient for any person to try just about anything to get rid of them. The most prominent cause of migraine is the changes in the amount of serotonin in the body which is a chemical that stimulate the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels in the body.
If the serotonin levels in the body decrease, blood vessels start to swell while when the levels are high the blood vessels tend to shrink down. Swelling of the blood vessels can cause immense pain and irritation and cause migraine.
Migraine headaches are one of the leading cause for people to visit the doctor. It is a very common health problem, which has higher chances of arising in women during their reproductive years.
In addition to the insufferable pain, migraine also carries other symptoms such as blurred vision, loss of focus, nauseas, vomiting and also increase the sensitivity to light and sound.
While over the counter medication are particularly popular in treating migraine headaches, they are not the only solution to this problem. Some home remedies can be applied to keep migraine headaches at bay.
Use Cold Therapy to Deal With Migraine Headaches
A very easy remedy for migraine headaches is to use cold therapy. Apply a cold compress to your head and neck. These cold compresses help to numb the area of the pain which helps to reduce pain.
To apply cold therapy for migraine headaches:
Wrap a bunch of ice cubes in a towel of a piece of cloth.
Place this on your head and neck for 10-15 minutes.
Repeat until the pain subsides.
Note: Do not apply ice directly to the skin as it can cause frostbite.
Some other solutions for Migraine Headaches Include:
Ginger tea is very helpful against migraine headaches. It has anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit prostaglandins which is a chemical that promotes the contractions of muscles, cause inflammation in the blood vessels of the brain while also contributing towards hormonal changes.
To Make Ginger tea at home:
Mix 1 tbsp. of grated ginger in 1 ½ cup of water.
Heat up this mixture and boil it for 5 minutes.
Strain it in a cup and add 1 tsp of honey.
Drink ginger tea at least 3 times a day for complete relief from migraine.
Massaging is also a very good way to relieve the pain of migraines. Massages help block the pain signals to the brain and boost serotonin activity in the body. It stimulates the serotonin receptors, which help to ease pain and reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.Massage therapy also help remove sleep deprivation, which is a major issue of migraines.
To implement massage therapy for migraines:
Warm any herbal oil such as mustard oil, almond oil , olive oil and coconut oil
Apply it on your forehead.
Massage your forehead with your fingertips.
Repeat for 10-15 minutes.
Eat Magnesium Rich Foods
Magnesium helps reduce migraine attacks from forming in the body. Magnesium is highly beneficial for women during their menstrual cycle which causes a decrease in magnesium in the body.
Include such food in you diet that have naturally high in magnesium content such as leafy green vegetable such as spinach, broccoli etc., almonds, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, low fat yogurt, black beans, avocados, bananas etc. Using magnesium supplements are also recommended but do not take the dosage more than that prescribed by the doctor.
Drink more Coffee
Caffeine in coffee helps relief the symptoms of migraine. Caffeine stimulates the blood vessels in the brain and blocks some pain receptors in the brain. Many over the counter migraine medication include caffeine as their main ingredient.
However, intake of too much caffeine can cause migraine instead of curing it so make sure keep the intake in moderation. Do not take more than 2 cups of coffee a day.
